Cascades Job Corps Celebrates First On-Campus Graduation Ceremony Since 2015

On August 14, 2026, Cascades Job Corps marked a significant milestone by hosting its first on-campus student graduation ceremony since 2015. The event brought together students, staff, family members, and community supporters to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2026 and recognize the hard work and determination that led them to this important moment.

The ceremony featured a special guest address from Senator Keith Wagoner, who encouraged graduates as they prepare to take the next steps in their educational and career journeys. Adding a personal and heartfelt touch to the event, graduate Daniel Serna delivered the student commencement speech, reflecting on the strong sense of family, support, and community that students experience at Cascades Job Corps.

Center Director Kendra Watson welcomed attendees and recognized the perseverance, growth, and accomplishments of the graduating class. In her remarks, she celebrated the dedication students demonstrated throughout their time at the center and encouraged them to pursue their goals with confidence and determination. She also closed the ceremony with words of encouragement as graduates embark on new opportunities.

Serving as master of ceremonies, Career Counselor Andrew White guided the program and coordinated several meaningful traditions that made the celebration memorable. Highlights included the Presentation of Colors, National Anthem, Presentation of Certificates, and the cherished Rose Ceremony, which gave graduates an opportunity to express gratitude to those who supported them along the way.

The return of an on-campus graduation ceremony represents more than just a celebration of academic and career achievements. It reflects the strength of the Cascades Job Corps community and its commitment to empowering students to succeed both personally and professionally.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026 on this remarkable achievement. We wish each graduate continued success as they take the next step toward a bright and promising future.

From Job Corps Student to High-Paying Heavy Equipment Operator: Dale Stilts’ Success Story

Success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes determination, hard work, and the willingness to seize new opportunities when they arise. For Dale Stilts, that commitment to building a better future has led to a remarkable career journey and a bright future in the heavy equipment industry.

After graduating from Greenville High School in May 2019, Dale set his sights on creating a pathway to long-term success. In April 2024, he enrolled at Mingo Job Corps, taking an important step toward achieving his career goals. With focus, dedication, and a strong work ethic, he embraced the opportunities before him and began developing the skills needed to succeed in a high-demand field.

Dale quickly distinguished himself in the Heavy Equipment Operations trade, demonstrating both technical aptitude and a commitment to excellence. In May 2025, he successfully completed the program, marking a significant milestone in his journey. Rather than stopping there, Dale chose to continue building on his success by advancing into post-secondary training as an apprentice with Operating Engineers Local 513 JATC in Silex, Missouri.

His dedication paid off almost immediately. By September 2025, Dale had secured employment as a Heavy Equipment Operator with Foundation Service Corp, earning $39.06 per hour. This achievement reflected not only the value of the training he received but also his determination to apply his knowledge and skills in the workforce.

Dale’s career momentum continued to grow. In July 2026, he advanced to a position with Luhr Crosby, LLC, earning an impressive $46.80 per hour. His steady progression highlights the opportunities available to those who invest in their education, develop in-demand skills, and remain committed to continuous growth.

Today, Dale’s story serves as an inspiring example of what is possible when ambition meets opportunity. From a recent high school graduate seeking direction to a highly skilled heavy equipment operator earning a strong wage, his journey demonstrates the life-changing impact of workforce training and career development programs.

Job Corps does more than provide training. It equips students with the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed to build meaningful careers. Dale Stilts’ success is a testament to the transformative power of that mission and a reminder that with dedication and the right support, extraordinary outcomes are possible.

Job Corps changes lives, and Dale’s story is proof.

Fall into Safety: Staying Safe Through the Changing Seasons

As we move from fall into winter, our teams across the country face a shifting set of seasonal hazards. Days are shorter, the weather is less predictable, and conditions can change quickly. A little preparation now helps keep everyone safe through the colder months.

Adjust to the darker days. When clocks fall back in early November, many of us will commute in the dark. Keep your headlights on at dawn and dusk, stay alert for pedestrians, and make sure walkways and parking areas are well lit. Report burned-out lights right away.

Watch for deer on the road. Deer collisions peak in October through December, especially around sunrise and sunset. Slow down in wooded areas, use high beams when it’s safe, and remember that where there’s one deer, there are often more. If a collision can’t be avoided, brake firmly and stay in your lane rather than swerving.

Mind your footing. Wet leaves can be just as slippery as ice, and once winter arrives, snow and ice take over. Walk with short steps, keep your hands free to catch yourself, and wipe your feet when you come inside. Report slippery floors or icy walkways instead of assuming someone else will.

Heat safely. As the heating season begins, keep space heaters at least three feet from anything flammable, plug them directly into the wall, and never leave them running unattended. Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working at work and at home.

Dress and drive for winter. Layer up, choose footwear with good traction, and watch for signs of cold stress like numbness or confusion. Before driving, clear all snow and ice from your vehicle, double your following distance, and keep a basic kit on hand: a scraper, blanket, flashlight, phone charger, water, and snacks.

When in doubt, check in. If conditions look unsafe, talk to your supervisor before traveling. No appointment or deadline is worth an accident.

Seasonal safety isn’t one big step. It’s about small habits that help all of us get home safely every day.

Finish Strong: Reflecting on Your Year and Setting Goals That Stick

As the year comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and think intentionally about what comes next. Between deadlines, meetings, and day-to-day responsibilities, it’s easy to move from one task to another without recognizing how much you’ve accomplished. Taking even 30 minutes to reflect on your progress can provide valuable insight and help you enter the new year with clarity and purpose.

Start by Looking Back

Meaningful growth begins with honest reflection. Before setting goals for the coming year, take time to evaluate the one that’s ending.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I proudest of this year?
  • What challenged me most, and what did I learn from it?
  • What skill would make the biggest difference in my work next year?

Writing down your answers can reveal accomplishments and lessons you may have overlooked. Often, we focus so much on what’s next that we forget to celebrate how far we’ve come.

Set Goals That Are Clear and Actionable

One of the most common mistakes people make is creating goals that are too broad. While aspirations like “improve communication” or “be a better leader” are valuable, they can be difficult to put into action.

Instead, focus on goals that are specific and measurable. For example:

  • Lead one team meeting each month.
  • Complete a de-escalation training by March.
  • Schedule quarterly networking conversations with industry peers.
  • Read one leadership book each quarter.

Clear goals provide direction, accountability, and a way to track progress. Rather than creating an overwhelming list, focus on two or three meaningful objectives that will have the greatest impact on your professional growth.

Make Development Part of Your Daily Routine

Professional growth doesn’t happen only in formal training sessions or conferences. Some of the most valuable learning opportunities happen during everyday interactions and experiences.

Consider ways to build development into your routine:

  • Ask a colleague whose work you admire how they approach a particular challenge.
  • Volunteer for a project that pushes you outside your comfort zone.
  • Read an article, industry publication, or professional resource each week.
  • Seek feedback regularly and use it to strengthen your skills.

Small, consistent actions often lead to the greatest long-term growth.

Share Your Goals

Once you’ve identified your goals, don’t keep them to yourself. Discuss them with your supervisor, mentor, or trusted colleagues.

Sharing your goals creates accountability and opens the door to valuable support. Your supervisor may be able to connect you with resources, training opportunities, or experiences that align with your development objectives. Simply speaking your goals out loud can significantly increase your commitment to achieving them.

Start the New Year with Purpose

Every year brings new opportunities to learn, grow, and make an impact. By taking time to reflect on your accomplishments, identify areas for growth, and set intentional goals, you’ll be better prepared to make the most of the year ahead.

The strongest goals aren’t just about where you want to go. They’re built on an honest understanding of where you’ve been. As you prepare for the coming year, take a moment to celebrate your progress, embrace the lessons you’ve learned, and create a plan that will help you continue moving forward.

A successful year ahead starts with reflection today.
